Chatroulette! Randomized Connections Online

Social Media has allowed for average people to connect with other people all over the world. The majority of those connections are with friends, family, colleagues or acquaintances on Twitter, Facebook and the other popular social networks. Especially with Twitter allowing anyone to follow your stream, the random connections are unavoidable but usually based on something like a comment about a similar interest.

In comes Chatroulette! to truly randomize connections. The site has been covered in excess since it’s launch as a breeding ground for flashers but with some filters and focus it can be a great access point for connections. Although I’m too scared to actually try it out (random nudity is not my thing), the process to play the game is simple. All you need is a webcam and internet and you’re good to go. There are no filters, search terms or common interest just raw, random connection.

This concept is exciting and intriguing because it is fundamentally dangerous. That danger attracts a certain audience for at least a one time visit but to keep people interested and coming back, it will require the option of filtering. For example, today I might want to talk about Fashion and Style, I would be much more likely to jump onto the site if I knew it was likely I would connect with someone wanting to discuss the same topic. With those filters, Chatroulette could become a site with staying power rather than a passing trend.

Here is a video, no nudity included, showcasing the fun nature of the tool.

Brizzly.com: Social Networking Made Simple

Originally published on bub.blicio.us

Brizzly.com, a reader that works with Twitter and Facebook, officially launched to the public today (previously available by invitation). The site pulls in the information from each social networking account, which is relatively straight forward. Beyond simple aggregation, Brizzly adds additional features that make the site attractive to users of both social networking sites. The two streams are accessed with tabs at the top of the page and at first glance, it seems like a simple site that brings Twitter and Facebook onto one page but the additional features are what make this reader useful.

Picture 2One of the additional features that stands out is the “why?” button next to the Twitter trending topics. For example, Oprah Winfrey is trending and you may be curious why. Click the “why?” button and you see this simple blurb “Oprah is ending her talk show in late 2011 when her contract expires. She will then launch her Oprah network in partnership with Discovery Networks” Brizzly allows users to get that extra trending information not available in the web based version of Twitter.

Also, the ability to save searches is included in Brizzly so you can easily track conversations that interest you without having to do a unique Twitter Search every time. Brizzly will also translate a tweet from one language to the accounts default language.

The Facebook tab does not offer much in addition to the existing streams in Facebook. The ease of quickly clicking between Facebook and Twitter is one of the features that makes Brizzly useful when accessing Facebook information. There aren’t many perks for the Facebook only user.

Brizzly did officially launch today so additional features will likely be added in the near future. The site offers a simple and clean user interface, making it an attractive option for staying on top of your social networks. There’s also an adorable bear mascot, who wouldn’t love that?

Vook: book meet video, video meet book

Originally published on bub.blicio.us
A book may not be the first thing that comes to mind when discussing innovation but as technology has progressed, the way we consume the information presented in books has made a steady evolution. From the audio book to the Kindle, technology has jumped in to make books easier to consume in a variety of formats creating a debatably richer experience.

vookNew to the market is Vook. It is the latest innovation in reading that brings together books, video and the Internet. Vooks are available on the web and to download on a mobile phone. It’s an interesting idea with the goal of supplementing books with video and social content that aren’t available in the static format.

The web-based version allow for the reader to view the text of the book in a similar format to an e-Reader. Video is incorporated on the side of the screen so you can easily view complementary material without flipping between screens or from book to computer. It also includes social media capabilities by integrating with Twitter, Facebook and other social networks. The mobile format has similar features but due to the size of the screen, readers are directed to video rather than it being incorporated in the screen. Although I have yet to try it, I imagine this is incredibly useful for cookbooks and fitness materials more so than novels.

The book selection is on the smaller side and focused on fitness and cooking texts but the site is new and I expect their library to grow. I do wonder if they will attempt to turn some of the classics into Vooks, which could be very interesting to see.

The “Twitterazzi”

As a long time Twitter fan, I’ve had the hunch that all Twitter needed to break out of the technology niche and into the mainstream was a “Perez Hilton” of the world to become an evangelist. Now that he (and other similar celebrity bloggers) have joined, I wonder if going mainstream actually brings down the street cred for the earlier adopters (I am not an early adopter but an earlier one than most)

To demonstrate my point, here are some quality [insert sarcasm here] Twitter posts from @PerezHilton

  • Homewrecker LeAnn Rimes speaks!!! Click here to read her statement: http://tinyurl.com/cn9tsl
  • @leannrimes I feel bad for your gay husband! How could you do that to him???
  • Before the year is over, I’d love to report “Miley Cyrus is pregnant!” What headline would U like to see????

I want to make it clear, Twitter is just a tool for expressing oneself. Most of us try to join and contribute to the conversation while most of the “Twitterazzi” tend to go for the shock factor. I don’t have a problem with the shock factor but I hope that the goal is to contribute to the conversation while the mention about Miley Cyrus doesn’t really provide any value. I would hope that the same level of quality journalism is expected across genre.

In addition, when it comes to breaking a story, I do think it’s important to confirm facts before pushing them out on Twitter or otherwise. For example, with the recent death of Natasha Richardson, @PerezHilton was quick to push out the news a full 24 hours before the official announcement was made. This was one of the many factors that contributed to the confusion around her condition.

I do love celebrity gossip but I do believe that certain lines are being crossed when rude comments are made about a minor or sensitive matters are posted before they should be. The plus with the growing popularity in celebrity culture is that a bunch of celebrities are now on Twitter. Find your favorite celebrities on Twitter at: http://www.celebritytweet.com/

The fact remains that following someone is optional not required.

11/20/08: Social Studies: The “Awesome” List

An almost weekly rundown of social media trends/stories

1.One Billion Tweets Later: GigaTweet has been keeping track of the tweets that we all have shared back and forth and it appears that the One Billion Mark has been passed on November 12th. If you check out the GigaTweet site, you’ll be amazed with how quickly the counter continued to grow. Current count:

2.Old media meets new media: Gabriel Madway of Reuters published an article “Tech firms turn to social media to reach consumers” on November 18th noting the trend of tech firms to utilize social media. Why this less than surprising trend? A lot has to do with the ability to reach customers on a relationship level but another big factor is the economy. With economic crisis looming, companies are looking for ways to get the most “bang for their buck” and social media has become the way to do that while building authenticity. Social media does require that companies give up a level of control in exchange for that authenticity, so it’s not right for everyone.

3.What is Social Media? With all this talk about social media, you think we would all know what it is. The word is really a blanket term since social media is rarely media at all. Yes, we all use Twitter to follow different media targets and outlets but it’s a stretch to refer to what social media is as “media”. According to Mark Hopkins of Mashable, media is referring to the message while the word in front of media is the method which it is delivered. Old, new or social, the message is still the same. For more on this discussion, be sure to check out Mark’s full article “Just What is Social Media?”.

Building a Brand/Personality Online

I’ve been thinking a lot about brand building. It’s the public relations part of my that really spends time on that topic. Having recently started working with a new client that is not well knows, it’s an obvious challenge my team and I will face over the next few months and beyond. That’s not what I’m hear to write about since this is a non-work related blog but the two worlds intersect as I reflect on my personality online and what it is I choose to present.

I began this blog as a personal reflection on my life in Silicon Valley and how the two connect. I haven’t always been involved in (or cared) about the Valley. Up until a few months ago, I didn’t know who Sarah Lacy or MG Siegler were and didn’t think too much about Twitter or Six Apart. Now that is all I think about and I can’t help but jump for joy when I get comments from other folks on this blog (Mario, I’m talking to you!). Then I think about the line between work and life and when it disappeared.

This brings me to my point about online brand and personality. When I first joined the endless social networking sites around (Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, Hi5, etc.), I was presenting my personality and who I wanted my online friends to see. In college it was all about being cool, post-college it was all about reclaiming the glory of those good old days. That brings me to the present day. I’ve learned to be very careful with what I present on both those sites and my blog because I know the folks I need to succeed have or will see what I’m writing today. It’s a little intimidating to know that my random rant on my love of Twitter may impact my future… you gotta agree.

I’ve spent some time tracking down articles and blog posts that discuss what I’ve been getting too in my round about style. Here they are:

  • http://www.jobsnewswire.com/article/facebook-can-reveal-if-employees-are-really-off-sick-id18796935.html
Would love your thoughts on building an online brand and how your online personality is different from how you are in real life.

The ultimate partnership: Current.tv and Twitter

By now this is old news by now but I was way more into tweeting about it than writing about it (which begs the question, is tweeting taking over blogging… to be addressed at another time).

Two of my favorite companies in the world, Current.tv and Twitter have joined forces to integrate Twitter messages into the live television broadcast of the 2008 presidential debates. The program, Hack the Debate, will feature actual user tweets on the screen during airing of the debates (Comcast channel 107). Here are the details on how you can get involved:

How to PARTICIPATE:

1.Tune in on September 26th at 9pm EST/ 6pm PST for the Live Presidential Debate. Find Current TV on your local cable/satellite provider or come here to watch the live stream of our broadcast.
2.Make sure you’ve registered with Twitter to participate.
3.During the debates, chime in by including “#current” in your tweet. Example:
4.”This discussion about universal healthcare makes me want to pop some pills! #current”
5.You can follow along with other Current tweeters here by following #current on Twitter search.
6.If you have any questions about participating, send us a tweet @current.

Things I Hate about Twitter

Something very odd happened this morning around 3am. I felt the need to check my Twitter feed. There are very few things I want to do at 3am other than sleep. Occasionally I’ll feel parched and need a glass of water but usually sleep in the only thing on my mind. So, I thought I would share my feelings about Twitter in a poem, “10 Things I Hate about You” style (yes, the poem from the movie).

I H@te Twitter
I hate the way you’re my home page
And the way you just appear on my phone.
I hate the way you let me know everything
I didn’t know I needed to know.

I hate your silly little tweets
And the way you eat up my time.
I hate you so much that it makes me sick
It even makes me rhyme.

I hate the way you’re always there
I hate the symbol
I hate it when the Fail Whale appears
Even if it makes me smile.

I hate it when I don’t have service
Or the fact that you were down.
But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you
Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.
