Building a Brand/Personality Online

I’ve been thinking a lot about brand building. It’s the public relations part of my that really spends time on that topic. Having recently started working with a new client that is not well knows, it’s an obvious challenge my team and I will face over the next few months and beyond. That’s not what I’m hear to write about since this is a non-work related blog but the two worlds intersect as I reflect on my personality online and what it is I choose to present.

I began this blog as a personal reflection on my life in Silicon Valley and how the two connect. I haven’t always been involved in (or cared) about the Valley. Up until a few months ago, I didn’t know who Sarah Lacy or MG Siegler were and didn’t think too much about Twitter or Six Apart. Now that is all I think about and I can’t help but jump for joy when I get comments from other folks on this blog (Mario, I’m talking to you!). Then I think about the line between work and life and when it disappeared.

This brings me to my point about online brand and personality. When I first joined the endless social networking sites around (Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, Hi5, etc.), I was presenting my personality and who I wanted my online friends to see. In college it was all about being cool, post-college it was all about reclaiming the glory of those good old days. That brings me to the present day. I’ve learned to be very careful with what I present on both those sites and my blog because I know the folks I need to succeed have or will see what I’m writing today. It’s a little intimidating to know that my random rant on my love of Twitter may impact my future… you gotta agree.

I’ve spent some time tracking down articles and blog posts that discuss what I’ve been getting too in my round about style. Here they are:

Would love your thoughts on building an online brand and how your online personality is different from how you are in real life.

The ultimate partnership: Current.tv and Twitter

By now this is old news by now but I was way more into tweeting about it than writing about it (which begs the question, is tweeting taking over blogging… to be addressed at another time).

Two of my favorite companies in the world, Current.tv and Twitter have joined forces to integrate Twitter messages into the live television broadcast of the 2008 presidential debates. The program, Hack the Debate, will feature actual user tweets on the screen during airing of the debates (Comcast channel 107). Here are the details on how you can get involved:

How to PARTICIPATE:

1.Tune in on September 26th at 9pm EST/ 6pm PST for the Live Presidential Debate. Find Current TV on your local cable/satellite provider or come here to watch the live stream of our broadcast.
2.Make sure you’ve registered with Twitter to participate.
3.During the debates, chime in by including “#current” in your tweet. Example:
4.”This discussion about universal healthcare makes me want to pop some pills! #current”
5.You can follow along with other Current tweeters here by following #current on Twitter search.
6.If you have any questions about participating, send us a tweet @current.

Tweet away my friends, tweet away!

Call out. whoop whoop!!

Got a nice call out from my buddy Kristine Gloria in the below video posted on Sarah Lacy’s blog. Check out Sarah’s blog as she spends September experimenting with lifecasting: www.sarahlacy.com. I’m a fan of Sarah Lacy so it awesome to hear my name in the video, even if it’s my friend who gives me the shout out. Next time, it’ll be Sarah herself :)

Food. Yay. from sarah lacy on Vimeo.

I know I’ve drifted towards video reposting on my blog but what can I say, there are some great videos out there. Back to the real blog posts now…

For those of you who didn’t know, this week was crazy in SF with CTIA, TechCrunch50 and the Apple announcement. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend any of these events but I was able to check out the chi.mp party on Tuesday night. Chi.mp allows users to manage their online life with your own domain. I was able to learn a little bit about the content hub but haven’t been able to play around with it just yet (waiting for my beta code) but the idea is really cool. I have so much stuff online and it would be great to aggregate that into one space. I’ve seen a bunch of aggregators out there but it seems that they just streamline the many online sites and make it easy to access. Chi.mp on the other hand appears to give the use a ton more control over the information on the web. I’m excited to see where this company goes.

There are tons of new sites that launch everyday but one that has really caught my attention is 12seconds.tv. As you know, I’m obsessed with Twitter and 12seconds is like the video version of Twitter. Instead of being limited to 140 characters, you’re limited to 12 seconds of video. I also love how the folks that created 12seconds refer to themselves as “a small team of nerds mostly from Santa Cruz”. Love it. I’m not a huge fan of video but I may begin now that there is an ADD version of video sharing.

Celebrities and Technology

For those of you who know me, you know that I love celebrity gossip and technology (not necessarily at the same time). Below, take a look at my favorite silicon valley tech writer, Sarah Lacy, interview Ashton Kutcher about the newly launched Blah Girls. I’ve only quickly checked out the site but I’m excited to see where this goes.

Social Networking Wars

Caught this one on CurrentTV last night, hilarious!

Oh, Gateway…

I think Gateway missed the memo. I’m fully aware the Gateway does not have the best computers, that’s why I use a Mac. I love my Mac, I’ve had it for 2 ½ years now and it still works. That’s a record for me and a computer, just so you know. My parents on the other hand have owned a Gateway for about a year and a half. They’ve had ongoing issues but the most recent, with the computer shutting down regularily, has been enough to actually call tech support. In an effort to help, I called Gateway tech support on my parents behalf. It was not pretty.

Its started of nice enough, no real wait time. Then the tech support person asks to confirm some information. The name on the account is completely different than anyone in my family. I say no, that is not the correct name. He has the correct phone number but a completely different name and address. My parents purchased the computer from the Home Shopping Network, it doesn’t make sense that my parents wouldn’t be listed as the owner. The tech person refused to help me.

Ok, I call again. This time the tech support person does help, even thought he’s aware of the name issue. He makes some recommendations about what can be done to the computer. He fixed it so well that the computer doesn’t even turn on anymore… oh boy! I call back again and they mention that the owner needs to chat with Level 2 (what is this? a sci fi novel).

I pass this on to my dad so that he can call Level 2. In order to get to level 2, you need to talk to the general tech support line. My dad calls and is explaining the issue and the tech support person said that they may have sent a used laptop and that is why. My dad questions the legality of doing such a thing and the rep giggles and hangs up. Wow.

My dad calls again and gets transferred to Level 2. They ask him to fax over the receipt and then a representative will call from Level 2 to confirm that the ownership has been changed, therefore allowing my parents to request addition technical support. It’s been 3 days and nothing, can’t say I’m a big Gateway fan at this point…
